1. Christmas Special: The Art of Sister Claire SMMI
You may not have heard of Sister Claire (1937-2018), a relatively unknown nun-artist from Bangalore. But her story is a powerful testament to the futility of denying one’s destiny. Drawn to spirituality and the ascetic life from a young age, Meera (as she was christened at birth) fervently sought a life of prayer and service. At the age of 17, to avoid an arranged marriage, she fled from her home to the St. Mary’s convent run by the Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (SMMI) at Bangalore.
It was here that she started creating Christian art rooted in the Indian context. She said, “Art is who you are. I am Indian, so my paintings reflect the culture best-known to me.”
