Daak Weekly: The Colourful World of Proverbs
Have you ever marvelled at how a simple saying can capture the wisdom of centuries? The genius of a community is often reflected in the proverbs, idioms, and maxims they use in everyday language. These expressions capture the essence of cultural wisdom and shared experiences, integrating the values, humour, and perspectives that have been passed down through generations. Their rich imagery often conveys hidden meanings and historical contexts, adding vibrancy to our conversations.
Imagine spending an afternoon skimming through a comprehensive list of Hindi and Urdu "muhavare" (idioms or proverbs) – a notable collection that invites exploration is Mukhzin Al Muhavarat by Munshi Charanjee Laal Sahib, a treasure trove revealing the vast cultural heritage embedded within language.
Another intriguing resource is S.W. Fallon’s A Dictionary of Hindustani Proverbs. Since Fallon largely depended on locals for translations, he incidentally included, to our great delight, even offensive words and local insults. The rhymes, proverbs, and sayings in Bhojpuri within this collection are particularly striking. They paint a colourful yet perilous world filled with fools, braggarts, thieves, cheats, conniving friends, and treacherous family members, offering practical advice spiced with humour to help navigate life with caution and scepticism.
Equally enriching is J. Hilton Knowles’ The Dictionary of the Kashmiri Proverbs and Sayings. Compiled during two lengthy winters in the picturesque landscape of Kashmir, Knowles captures the resilience and depth of the Kashmiri language, preserving proverbs that date back to the 13th century. This compilation serves not only as a dictionary but also as a reflection of the rich oral traditions of a people who have thrived in isolation among the mountains. The sayings in this work provide a captivating glimpse into Kashmiri culture, revealing the values, beliefs, and stories that have shaped the community over centuries.
The study of proverbs is more than an academic pursuit; it is a journey into the heart of what it means to share human experiences across cultures. Engaging with them allows us to appreciate the complexities of language and the wisdom embedded in cultural expressions, fostering a greater connection to the broad tapestry of human life. Which proverbs from your culture have left a lasting impression on you?
