Daak Weekly: To Childhood Innocence
Why are we drawn to the innocent, imaginative world of children? Perhaps the appeal lies is the simplicity and clarity with which children can question and express complex emotions and ideas, without adulterating their words and deeds like adults often tend to do. Children show us the true value of joy, compassion, and love, and remind us to keep the important things important.
Tagore’s collection of children’s poems, The Crescent Moon (1913), explores the delicate, make-believe world of children. Through the primary relationships forged by children, Tagore shows us how fragile, yet simple a child’s love can be. Although most poems in this collection focus on a child’s intimacy with his mother, the poem that stood out for us was “Sympathy,” where the child expresses his complete devotion and love for animals, even challenging his mother's authority. It shows us that following the logic of the heart can result in a more compassionate and connected world.
Annada Sankar Ray further extends this idea by using children’s poetry for social and political commentary. In his rhyme "Khoka O Khuku," he critiques the logic behind the partition, vividly depicting the societal ramifications through the eyes of children. This poem serves as a bridge between the political landscape and the world of children, introducing them to the absurdities of adult conflicts.
While the messages and metaphors in children’s poetry deliver important lessons, the rhythm, rhyme, and playful language, makes for musical and joyful readings. This linguistic playfulness is evident in George Keyt’s nursery rhymes, lovingly crafted and illustrated for his daughter, Diana. At just two years old, she inspired him to hand-paint a collection based on her fears and fascinations, forming a tender tribute to childhood innocence and the protective bond of a loving father.
In a world that often feels overwhelming and complex, it is important to stay connected to the innocence, authenticity, and wisdom of childhood. This connection can ground us and remind us that there is much to celebrate and find joy in.
