1. Divine Presence by SG Thakur Singh
As literature and art bear testimony, faith is timeless. For thousands of years, a divine presence (however different our conceptions of it may be) has inspired creative output and interpretation. Many have tried to capture, understand, and give shape to this mysterious spirit that moves us. For those of faith, especially celebrating the month of Ramadan, or those who find divinity in nature or other sources, here's a moving image of worship by SG Thakur Singh. May you find solace and serenity wherever you seek it.
2. I Walked on a Path by Jiddu Krishnamurti
I walked on a path through the jungle Which an elephant had made, And about me lay a tangle of wilderness. The voice of desolation fills the distant plain. And the city is noisy with the bells of a tall temple. Beyond the jungle are the great mountains, Calm and clear. In the fear of Life The temptation of sorrow is created. Cut down the jungle -- not one mere tree, For Truth is attained By putting aside all that you have sown. And now I walk with the elephant.
There’s a lot to unpack in this short poem! In his deceptively simple style, our spiritual guide, Krishnamurti, reminds us that amidst the jungle of confusion created by life, we can always find answers in nature — walking the path cleared by a wise elephant towards the calm, unwavering mountains in the distance. What is especially interesting is that nature represents both the problem (the seeds and trees of our attachment) as well as the solution (the path cleared by the elephant) implying that perhaps, the answers are not far away in the distance but within ourselves. What do you think?
