1. Independence Day Special: Nandalal Bose and Illustrating the Constitution
Nandalal Bose (1882-1966), one of the pioneers of modern Indian art who was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress movement, played a significant role in shaping the visual identity of India's Constitution. Recognized for his nationalist vision, Bose was entrusted with illustrating the manuscript of the Indian Constitution, a task he approached with great dedication. He assembled a team of talented artists who created twenty-two meticulously crafted images that reflect India's rich heritage and culture. Each illustration, painted in gold leaf and stone colours using traditional methods, corresponds to the Constitution's twenty-two parts.
The images in the Constitution's illustrations include significant cultural and historical scenes, starting with the humped-bull seal from Mohenjo-daro and progressing through various epochs, concluding with representations of influential figures, including Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose. Commissioned by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954, the illustrated manuscript showcases a blend of history, mythology, and geography, reflecting a complex understanding of India's past. Highlighting the artistic excellence of Bose and his team, this project solidified their contributions to India's cultural identity during a pivotal moment in its history. The collaboration of artists extended the narrative of India's diverse heritage, making it an enduring testimony to the nation's spirit.
